Laura Bush Foundation
for America's Libraries
Bans Humor Book

Washington, DC—The Laura Bush Foundation of America’s Libraries returned a donation of 15 autographed copies of a book entitled The Jolly President (or Letters George W. Bush Never Read), to its author, Joey Green. The Jolly President, a parody of a children’s book, follows the cartoon adventures of President George W. Bush as he sleeps his way through his administration, neglecting to read letters that could have changed the world for the better. The Laura Bush Foundation spent $8.10 in postage to send the books back to Green, and the organization’s Chief Financial Officer, Kenny Emson, explained in writing that “Unfortunately, we are not able to collect and distribute books from this office.”

“I could be wrong,” said Green, “but I’m pretty sure that returning 15 copies of a book to me by mail qualifies as the ability to distribute books. The Laura Bush Foundation could have just as easily sent those same books to one of the many libraries they support—unless there’s something about this book the good people at the Laura Bush Foundation just don’t like.”

Illustrated in full color, The Jolly President features pocket pages with a satiric letter, postcard, or party invitation tucked inside—from the likes of Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, and others. It’s all done in the spirit of Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and the old National Lampoon—the humor magazine to which Green was a contributing editor in the early 1980s.

Green personally donated the copies of The Jolly President to the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. “As the author of 35 books,” Green wrote to Mrs. Bush, who chairs the organization, “I salute your efforts and trust that you’ll find this book a worthy addition to our nation’s libraries or the perfect book for you to read to students at our nation’s elementary schools.”

Since its inception in 2002, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries has awarded over $2.5 million in grants to help school libraries across the nation create or enhance their book collections. Although the First Lady and the President’s mother head literacy programs, Mr. Bush has proudly stated that he doesn’t read.

The Jolly President (or Letters George W. Bush Never Read) is available in bookstores across the United States. To see an animated video of The Jolly President, visit www.lunaticpress.com.
